The number of Ukrainians living in poverty has increased significantly, reaching 9 million. This is 1.8 million more than in 2020.
These data were released by the World Bank's regional director for Eastern Europe, indicating a significant deterioration in the economic situation in the country.
According to him, the total number of poor people in the country now stands at 29% of the total population. The thing is that the Russian invasion continues to destroy the country's economy.
At the same time, the situation could have been much worse if Ukraine had not been allocated support from the foreign budget to enable it to pay pensions to the elderly and salaries to teachers and doctors.
The main reason for the increase in poverty is the decline in employment: more than a fifth of adults who worked before the war lost their jobs.
Specially allocated assistance in the form of resources for social spending was able to somewhat stabilize the situation and prevent the impoverishment of another three million people.
It is important to add that the current population of Ukraine is about 32 million people.
