A daily cup of green tea can be an effective way to support heart health. Nutritionist Dawn Manning explains that regular consumption of this beverage reduces the risk of heart disease due to its high content of antioxidants, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
EGCG helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, a process in which excess free radicals damage cells and blood vessels. This reduces the likelihood of plaque buildup in the arteries and heart disease.
In addition, green tea helps normalize cholesterol levels: regular consumption helps lower “bad” LDL and increase “good” HDL, which helps cleanse blood vessels. Studies also show a positive effect on blood pressure and vascular function.
Manning recommends drinking two to four cups of green tea a day. It's important to keep the drink unsweetened — this is how replacing sugary drinks with green tea brings the most heart benefits and keeps you feeling energetic throughout the day.
