The historic Weaving Workshop building in Podil has been covered with a painted facade and dismantling has begun, said monument keeper Dmytro Perov. Earlier, the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration stated that it was a matter of "restoration of the facade."
However, the obvious signs of dismantling and removal of historical materials suggest otherwise. The sounds of dismantling structures can be heard from inside the building, and historic bricks and prefabricated beams of interfloor ceilings are being removed from the courtyard.
The building previously belonged to a former prosthetic and orthopedic factory. In February 2024, it was purchased by businessman Roman Lunin, owner of the Velyka Kyshenya supermarket chain. Local monument preservationists express concern that the building's historical value may be destroyed under the guise of "restoration."
The situation in Podil has caused a resonance among activists and Kyiv residents, who are calling for verification of the legality of the works and the preservation of cultural heritage.
