The columnist of the British edition of The Guardian, Simon Jenkins, believes that US President Joe Biden should initiate peace talks on Ukraine and reach an agreement with Russia, without waiting for the possible arrival of Donald Trump to the post of US president. According to Jenkins, the geopolitical landscape is changing, and a change in president could have unintended consequences for stability in Europe and security on a global scale.
He believes that Putin will want to wait for Trump to start negotiations, but the Republican in office will face pressure from his environment and allies to continue the war.
According to Jenkins, there is no alternative to the Minsk and Istanbul agreements, and the Russian Federation will retain control over some territories of Ukraine, but will agree to Western guarantees for Ukraine. And Kyiv must admit that it will not be membership in NATO.
“Joe Biden should aim to end at least one of his wars before he leaves. Perhaps a deal can be reached before the chaos and uncertainty of the second Trump era begins. The US should seize this moment and give Russia the exit it needs. Putin can pass off failure as pragmatism. Who knows, maybe then he will receive Trump in Moscow," Jenkins writes.
It should be noted that in the West, opposite proposals are also being heard in the West - to increase aid to Ukraine and give permission for "long-distance" by the end of his term of office.
But, as we can see, there are other opinions.
