The State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" held a seminar dedicated to the Day of Forest Workers, led by Yuriy Bolokhovets, a man who was recently suspected of illicit enrichment. Despite the fact that he managed to visit a pre-trial detention center, the event was held in the usual style for the system - with awards, diplomas, and formal thanks.
However, there was no festive atmosphere. Officials and MPs pointedly ignored the event, understanding that photos next to the "king of forest schemes" could cost their political reputation.
According to official investigation data, Bolokhovets is involved in a case of illegal acquisition of assets worth over UAH 10.4 million, which significantly exceeds his official income. In particular, we are talking about an apartment in Kyiv worth about UAH 9 million and eight land plots with a total area of over 24 hectares, registered to controlled persons. The difference between the declared and actual property exceeds UAH 7.9 million.
The paradox is that after his scandalous dismissal in 2023, Bolokhovets received even greater powers. The reform of the forestry sector, which was supposed to ensure transparency and efficiency, actually concentrated management in his hands.
So instead of answering public questions about corruption and illicit wealth, Bolokhovets is throwing a celebration that looks more like a corporate party for the elite. For many, this is yet another proof: the state forest has turned into a private business clan, and the expected "cleansing" of the system has only been in words.
