Coffee is a beverage that many people can't imagine their morning without. But, as British researchers have found, excessive consumption of it can contribute to weight gain. The reason is the effect of caffeine on hormonal levels, in particular on the level of cortisol, known as the stress hormone.
Cortisol in small doses performs important functions: it maintains blood glucose levels, stimulates the brain, and regulates the nervous system. But when levels of this hormone become excessive—due to stress or excessive caffeine consumption—things start to go wrong.
What does this lead to?
-
Decreased testosterone production
-
Weakening of immunity
-
Anxiety and irritability
-
Insomnia
-
Fat accumulation, especially in the abdominal area
Nutritionists confirm that cortisol is directly linked to the process of obesity. In a state of stress, the body can gain up to 300 grams of adipose tissue per day - twice as much as in calm conditions.
But coffee is not only evil
Despite everything, coffee contains many antioxidants that may be beneficial for health. Scientists emphasize: everything depends on the dosage and quality of the drink.
In addition, a study by the University of Western Ontario previously noted that morning vigor can be achieved not only with coffee, but also with physical exercise - the effect will be similar, but the health benefits are much greater.
Therefore, experts advise not to abuse coffee, especially under stressful conditions, and to look for alternative ways to maintain energy - exercise, sleep, and proper nutrition.
