The former head of the Department of Infrastructure and Capital Construction of the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration will stand trial on charges of embezzling almost 2.9 million hryvnias of state funds, the Chernivtsi Regional Prosecutor's Office reported.
According to the investigation, after the natural disaster in the Dniester region, the government allocated funds to repair two damaged sections of roads in the region. It was this money, prosecutors claim, that became the subject of abuse.
The former head of the infrastructure department signed the certificates of work performed, despite the fact that the actual volume of repairs did not meet the terms of the contract. As a result, the contractor received almost UAH 2.9 million in unjustified payments from the budget.
The official's actions were qualified under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - abuse of official position with embezzlement on a particularly large scale.
The pre-trial investigation was conducted by detectives from the territorial department of the Bureau of Economic Security in Chernivtsi region. The indictment has now been submitted to the court, which must determine the extent of the former official's liability.
