Why is us drawn to sweet: the main causes and dangers to health

Thrust for sweet - familiar to almost every phenomenon, which often occurs suddenly and becomes obsessive. However, it is not always a signal about the real need of the body in glucose. Often it is a consequence of lack of nutrients, stress or hormonal changes. About it writes Interia Kobieta.

One of the main reasons for this desire is the fluctuations in blood glucose. When it falls sharply, the brain "requires" a quick source of energy - that is, sugar. But the consumption of sweets only temporarily improves the situation, and subsequently causes an even worse downturn due to insulin fluctuations. As a result, a vicious circle of constant hunger.

Hormones play no less important role. During stress, the body produces cortisol - a hormone that enhances appetite for high -calorie foods, including sweets. This mechanism is explained by evolutionarily: the body prepares for the threat, storage of energy. At the same time, leptin and grelin hormones are responsible for the feeling of satiety, and women are additionally affected by estrogen and progesterone, which change during the cycle.

Sometimes the thrust for sweet can indicate a lack of trace elements - such as magnesium or iron. This explains the popularity of chocolate as a source of minerals. Dark chocolate really has some beneficial properties, but most people prefer less healthy alternatives.

The psychological factor should not be ignored. Sweet is often associated with emotional comfort: childhood, family holidays, rewards. In combination with boredom or routine, it becomes another impetus for spontaneous sugar consumption.

Scientists also associate food passions with serotonin levels - a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. Its deficiency is associated with depression. And sometimes the body "tries" to compensate for with the help of a sweet, rich in carbohydrates.

But regular consumption of a large amount of sugar can have serious consequences: type II diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, energy and mood instability.

Sweet can be both a pleasure and an alarm. And if the desire becomes regular or obsessive, it is a reason to pay attention to the diet, emotional state and overall well -being.
