Today, the world and Ukraine celebrate several important events and dates. It is a day to remember prominent saints, honor victims of enforced disappearances, and even celebrate the birthday of the electric vacuum cleaner.

Church holiday

According to the new calendar, on this day, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of the three Patriarchs of Constantinople - Alexander, John, and Paul.

  • Saint Alexander (325–340) was a participant in the First Ecumenical Council and fought against the Arian heresy.

  • Saint John the Faster (582–595) became famous for his asceticism and steadfastness in faith.

  • Saint Paul the New (780–784) became known as a defender of icon veneration during the difficult time of persecution.

All three saints went down in history as courageous defenders of the purity of Christian doctrine.

Prohibitions of this day

Traditionally, on August 30th, it was not recommended to:

  • to swear and quarrel;

  • abuse alcohol and gamble;

  • to re-make the bed, because it was considered a bad omen.

Our ancestors carefully observed nature on this day:

  • starfall - a warning about possible health problems;

  • a starry sky is a sign of a fruitful year ahead;

  • a lot of mountain ash - expect a rainy autumn;

  • Birds are flying high - the weather will be warm and dry.

Traditionally, on this day, a feast was held with meat dishes - a symbol of abundance and strength.
