Anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency develops slowly and insidious. The body gradually adapts to the reduced amount or poor quality of erythrocytes, which is why at the beginning of the disease the symptoms seem mild or invisible.
However, doctors of one of the world's leading health companies - MSD - warn that there are three particularly dangerous symptoms that indicate a critical lack of vitamin B12. It:
-
dizziness
-
dyspnea
-
Hard heartbeat
These signs are often confused with other diseases, which complicates the correct diagnosis. However, the timely detection of the cause is critically important, as the advanced form of anemia can cause damage to the nervous system.
In the absence of B12, a person may experience tingling or numbness in the hands and legs. It can subsequently disrupt coordination and mobility. Another serious risk is the development of dementia and reducing cognitive function.
The only reliable way to detect a lack of vitamin is a blood test. If deficiency is detected, the patient is prescribed high doses B12 in the form of injections or tablets.
In most cases, after treatment, the signs of anemia disappear. However, if nervous tissue damage is already occurring, the consequences can be irreversible.
Doctors urge not to ignore anxiety symptoms and to undergo basic examinations, especially if there is chronic fatigue or impaired heart or nervous system.
