Day of Ilya Muromets: traditions, omens and history of the day

In 2024, Ukrainians continue to get used to the New Julian church calendar, which was adopted by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. December 19 is now celebrated as the day of St. Ilya Muromets, Kyiv-Pechersk, and according to the old style - the holiday of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

History and significance of Ilya Muromets

Saint Ilya Muromets, known from legends as a legendary hero, was at the same time a real historical figure. His relics are kept in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Born in the 12th century, Ilya lived a difficult life: he suffered from paralysis from childhood, but, according to legend, miraculously recovered thanks to three wise elders.

Many facts from legends are confirmed by scientific research. Experts found that Ilya had incredible physical strength, large muscles and received numerous combat injuries. According to legends, at the end of his life he took a haircut in the laurel and died defending it from the Polovtsy.

What do the omens say on December 19?

This day has always had a special significance in the national calendar. Signs say:

  • A clear frosty day - to a rich harvest.
  • Big snowfall - the snow will lie until January.
  • How much snow fell today, how much grass there will be in the spring.

What can not be done on this day?

On a church holiday, it is prohibited:

  • Swear, quarrel and envy.
  • Refusal to help the needy.
  • Violate the rules of the Christmas fast.
  • Borrowing or lending money can lead to financial problems in the new year.

People also believed that cleaning or hard physical work on this day could scare away luck.

What can be done?

On the day of Ilya Muromets, they turn to the saint with prayers for protection and health, especially for children with developmental disabilities or paralysis. The saint is also asked for help for the military and those who need healing from injuries.
