Former US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst identified two key components for achieving lasting peace in the region. According to a report by the Voice of America, Herbst believes that an effective end to the conflict requires, on the one hand, the supply of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with all the necessary weapons to liberate the territory from Russian aggression. On the other hand, he emphasizes the need to guarantee Ukraine's security through its accession to NATO.
"I believe that the only way to end this war is to make sure that Ukraine wins. Any other steps can only lead to a temporary cessation of the conflict, after which Moscow can return to most of Ukraine to make a final submission," Herbst emphasized.
The diplomat believes that at the moment the idea of a peace agreement with Russia is naive. According to him, in order to achieve real peace, it is necessary to first provide Ukraine with all the necessary weapons to liberate its territory from Russian aggression, as well as ensure security through NATO membership. Herbst emphasized the importance of diplomatic and military support, which guarantees the provision of the necessary weapons, affects the security of American interests in Europe and can have a positive impact on international relations.
