The dollar is rapidly becoming more expensive, but the National Bank does not intervene in the situation

The National Bank of Ukraine continues to refrain from active actions on the foreign exchange market, despite the rapid appreciation of the dollar, which has been ongoing since last week. The rate of the American currency is actively growing, and today, May 27, it exceeded the mark of 40 hryvnias per dollar.

The maximum offer rate, the so-called "hotilki", reached UAH 40.40/$. There were no real deals at this level, but it did prove bearish sentiment. But the National Bank did not try to extinguish them or influence them in any way.

"Apparently, the devaluation of the hryvnia is included in the NBU's plans and tasks, it does not stop it. Although everyone remembers that the National Bank is the main seller of the dollar on the interbank market, it is he who sets the tone there and determines the exchange rate. So 40.33 hryvnias/$ now suits the regulator. As recently as last Monday, we had UAH 39.67/$ on Bloomberg, and now it is UAH 40.33/$, which is a 1.7% devaluation of the hryvnia for the week. At this rate, we can have 41 on the interbank as early as next Monday, and we can even exceed the government's plan for this year - everyone remembers that the rate of 40.7 hryvnias/$ has been set for the state budget of 2024. And there is only one conclusion - it means that the National Bank and the government need it. The probable reason is the acute shortage of funds in the budget, which is officially recognized by the authorities. The lower the hryvnia exchange rate, the more income from taxes denominated in the currency, and the more hryvnia comes from the sale of incoming Western financial aid," said the chairman of the board of one of the banks.

According to the results of the day, the NBU raised its official exchange rate from UAH 40.1153/$ to UAH 40.3012/$

On the black market, the selling rate of the dollar on Monday rose from UAH 40.50/$ to UAH 40.57/$, and the buying rate - from UAH 40.10/$ to UAH 40.38/$.

At banks, the maximum cash sale price jumped by 15 kopecks and reached UAH 40.75/$ - it was set by MetaBank, and the average range was within UAH 40.40-40.70/$. Redemption of American currency in bank cash registers took place in the corridor of UAH 39.0-40.40/$.

The largest retail state structures, Privatbank and Oschadbank, placed cash purchase/sale within the limits of 39.90-40.50 UAH/$ and 40.10-40.60 UAH/$, respectively.

Today, card rates broke the 41-level. Acordbank set sale on cards at 41.15 UAH/$ - this is the maximum, and the minimum was at Ukreximbank at 40.25 UAH/$. The purchase here was in the range of UAH 39.50-40.55/$.

The average cost of selling a dollar to the current accounts of individuals within the limit of 50,000 hryvnias per month was 40.47 hryvnias/$. The maximum price tag (including related fees) reached UAH 41.32/$, set by Avangard Bank, and the minimum was UAH 40.40/$ (Idea Bank, TAScombank).
