The State Border Service of Ukraine is deploying additional forces to the border

Ukraine is strengthening control at the state border with Romania and Hungary within the Transcarpathian region. The State Border Guard Service has deployed additional forces to protect strategically important areas.

According to official information from the State Border Service of Ukraine, the number of attempts to illegally cross the border has increased significantly recently, particularly among conscripted men trying to escape mobilization. Many of them use dangerous routes through the Carpathians, forests, and rivers, which often leads to fatalities.

"Border guards have reinforced the most vulnerable areas on the border with Romania and Hungary," the State Border Service of Ukraine said in a statement.

According to service representatives, the following will be used to strengthen control:

  • additional mobile patrols

  • special automotive and technical support

  • drones and aviation

  • modern surveillance systems

This will allow not only to detect violators more quickly, but also to respond promptly to any attempts at illegal crossing.

In recent months, there has been an increase in cases of illegal crossings across the Ukrainian border. Men who are conscripted into the military try to escape to the EU using difficult routes through forested areas or crossing the Tisza River, which often ends in tragedy.

In 2023, border guards repeatedly recorded cases of men dying while trying to swim across a river or climb snowy mountain passes without proper training.

Strengthening border security is also related to the fight against smuggling. Illegal carriers are active in the region, helping evaders and smugglers.

The increased level of control may affect border crossing times for legal travelers. Expect increased checks of documents, luggage, and vehicles at border crossing points.

Border guards remind that legal border crossings occur exclusively through official checkpoints, and warn of the danger of illegal departure.

Ukrainian authorities urge citizens not to risk their lives and to comply with border crossing laws.
