Two residents of Kyiv will be tried for organizing arson of the property of servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Zakarpattia region. According to the investigation, they recruited local residents to perform "dirty work", offering a monetary reward.
This was reported in the press services of the Zakarpattia regional prosecutor's office and the regional police. Perpetrators face up to 10 years in prison.
The law enforcement officers note that the initiator of the criminal activity is another resident of Kyiv, who is currently wanted. Materials related to it are allocated to a separate proceeding.
According to the investigation, the accused were looking for executors among local residents of Transcarpathia. They were given information about military property to be destroyed, including addresses and vehicle details. The performers had to provide photo and video reports about the "work" performed.
In July and August 2024, the accused organized the arson of the property of three servicemen in Uzhgorod and Mukachevo. The list of future victims included more than a dozen employees of territorial recruitment and social support centers of the region. Law enforcement officers detected criminal activity in time and prevented the destruction of property.
The investigation established that the criminals planned to expand their activities to other regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv. Currently, the indictment against a 32-year-old resident of Kyiv and a 39-year-old previously convicted native of Donetsk region has been submitted to the court.
The accused are in custody. They are accused of organizing arson and involving citizens in criminal activities. If they are found guilty, they face up to 10 years in prison.
The situation caused indignation in society, as the victims were military personnel who protect the country. Public activists call for strict punishment of the guilty and increased control over similar crimes in the future.
Transcarpathian law enforcement officers emphasize the importance of citizens' cooperation with law enforcement agencies to prevent crimes.
