Electricity is going up: how much will you have to pay for light in May

From May 1, 2025, a special electricity tariff for those who use electric heating will be abolished in Ukraine. Currently, such consumers have the opportunity to pay a reduced tariff of UAH 2.64 per kWh for the first 2000 kWh , and then - at a total tariff ** 4.32 UAH per kWh **. However, since May, this privilege will not pay, and everyone will pay the same - UAH 4.32 per kWh.

According to the Cabinet Resolution No. 37, Ukrainians who use electric heating by the end of April 2025 are paid for light under the following conditions:

  • Up to 2000 kWh per month - UAH 2.64 per kWh
  • Over 2000 kWh - UAH 4.32 per kWh

But after May 1, this special tariff is canceled, and all consumers, regardless of consumption, will pay a single price - UAH 4.32 per kWh.

For example, if the consumer uses the tariff of "electric heating", in February used 1800 kWh, his account amounted to 4 752 UAH (1800 × 2,64).

But if after May 1 it consumes the same amount, it will pay 7 776 UAH (1800 × 4,32).

Currently, the price of electricity is UAH 4.32 per kWh by the end of April according to Government Resolution No. 632 of May 31, 2024.

That is, the government has two variants of events:

  1. Increase the cost of electricity since May 2025.
  2. Continue the current tariffs for another year.

According to government officials, the issue of raising electricity tariffs is not considered. The cost of UAH 4.32 per kWh now covers the cost of generation and current delivery.

However, the problem remains with imported electricity that Ukraine is forced to buy at much higher prices. During peak consumption hours, the deficit has to be covered with imports, which can create the preconditions for viewing tariffs in the future.

Although the government states that the rising tariffs are not on time, economic realities can make this position revise. The country's energy system has undergone significant destruction, and recovery requires considerable funds. In addition, the cost of purchasing electricity abroad continues to press on the budget.

Therefore, the decision on tariffs after April 2025 is not yet final. Most experts believe that the government will continue their current tariffs by the end of the next heating season, that is, by May 2026.
