Financial Times: Next week may decide the fate of peaceful settlement of war

Next week, it may be key to peace talks about Ukraine, after which the leading world leaders are preparing for important diplomatic meetings. On February 17, Paris will host a summit of European leaders, and negotiations between diplomatic representatives of the United States and Russia are planned in Saudi Arabia.

It is reported by Financial Times with reference to sources in diplomatic circles.

Representatives of the United States and Russia are negotiating the end of the war in Ukraine, and European leaders hold an emergency meeting to develop a response to discussions that are rapidly promoting without their participation.

According to the newspaper, the most influential leaders of Europe will gather in Paris on February 17 for crisis negotiations on Ukraine and future European defense. Among those present is Prime Minister of Britain, Kir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Heads of EU and NATO Institutes.

Another key event is the beginning of negotiations in Saudi Arabia, during which the US Chief Diplomat Marco Rubio will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"The purpose of the Rubio and Lavrov meeting is to lay the basis for Donald Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin," the authors say.

Rubio at a meeting of foreign ministers of G7 in Munich was less candid in his views on Ukraine. During negotiations with Laurel, he will focus on the logistics and planning of the meeting of Putin and Trump, and not on the details of the negotiating positions, three FT interlocutors said.

Trump shocked Europe by negotiating with Putin

The American leader shocked the European capitals, having agreed with a Russian counterpart on the beginning of peace talks. This will emphasize the lack of participation of Europeans in negotiations, which could eventually change the continent's security architecture, the newspaper writes.

“This is the beginning, the events are definitely moving. Are Europe's tectonic plates shifted? The world order began to change on February 24, 2022. We are now seeing the direction in which he can move, ”the FTland President Alexander Stubb explained in an interview with FT.

European leaders in Paris can discuss the location of European troops in Ukraine, and the United States does not reject the possibility of providing external support with any NATO-deployment by any deployment by NATO, two sources said.

According to other officials aware of the negotiations between the capitals, many European governments are concerned about the requests received this week from the United States to provide specific weapons, money and peacekeeping forces that they would be ready to direct to Ukraine.

Recall that the US President Special Representative Keith Kellogg in the fields of the Munich Conference said that Europe should not be involved in negotiations on the end of the war of Ukraine and Russia.
