Controversies regarding the construction of a new hydroelectric power station on the Dnipro River in the area of the Kakhovsky hydroelectric hub continue to grow, especially among representatives of the scientific community. Some opponents of the HPP project put forward interesting and well-founded arguments in support of their position.
In particular, The Page portal cites the opinions of a well-known hydrobiologist and member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Yury Kvach, who claims that it is inappropriate and even dangerous to repeat the mistakes of the past, in particular those that occurred during the USSR. The scientist urges to refrain from panic among those who believe that the lack of water resources can lead to the destruction of agriculture in Mykolayiv region and Kherson region. According to him, changes in climatic conditions allow to review the priorities in the agricultural sector of these regions.
According to Kvach, it is possible to reduce the emphasis on traditional agricultural crops through adaptation to climate change. In particular, the scientist recommends turning to the experience of past centuries and refocusing on the development of animal husbandry and horticulture, in particular nut crops that do not require a large amount of water. In his opinion, this will avoid the need to build a new hydroelectric power station.
