How to take care of your mental health: recommendations from the Center for Disease Control

The Ternopil Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention has published recommendations that will help Ukrainians maintain mental health in conditions of constant stress and a high pace of life. Experts emphasize that mental health is closely related to physical health, and simple daily habits can significantly improve well-being, energy levels, and emotional stability.

One of the key tips is to maintain a healthy sleep schedule. The brain needs time to rest and process information, and during sleep it is cleansed of metabolic products that accumulate during the day. Experts recommend sleeping 7–9 hours, going to bed and getting up at the same time, avoiding excessive screen time, and not replacing full sleep with weekend “sleep-offs” that only worsen your well-being.

A balanced diet is equally important. The brain consumes a significant portion of the body's energy, so nutrition directly affects mood, concentration, and memory. Nutritionists advise including foods with omega-3, whole grains, vegetables, berries, and nuts in your diet, as well as limiting processed foods and added sugar, which negatively affect cognitive function.

Experts also emphasize the importance of regular physical activity. Sports, walks, housework, or gardening - all of these activities help reduce stress levels, improve memory and concentration, and have a positive effect on self-esteem.

Social connections are another fundamental component of mental well-being. Regular communication with loved ones, support, and mutual trust create a sense of stability, happiness, and security. Experts advise devoting time to friendly relationships and, if necessary, building new ones.

The last piece of advice concerns meaningful activities. Work, hobbies, creativity, volunteering, or any other activity that gives a sense of meaning helps to cope with routine stress and brings back brightness to life. Psychologists recommend dedicating time to such activities, especially when emotional exhaustion appears.

The center emphasizes that taking care of mental health means creating conditions in which the brain and body work harmoniously. And implementing a few simple habits can significantly improve the quality of life.
