Certified trainer Jarrod Nobbe says that the way we start our morning affects our entire day. A good morning routine not only helps us wake up, but also improves our metabolism, energizes us, and lifts our spirits. In a commentary for Eat This, Not That, he shared five simple habits that you should start implementing tomorrow morning.
1. Get out into the light: Wake up with the sun
Even a few minutes in natural light in the morning can make a difference. Sunlight regulates your circadian rhythm, your body’s internal clock, which affects your sleep, energy levels, and metabolism. Daylight also increases serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone, which can improve your mood. If you can’t go outside, spend a few minutes by a window.
2. Move as soon as you wake up
. Morning physical activity doesn't have to mean hitting the gym. Light stretching, a few yoga poses, or a short walk will wake up your body, improve circulation, and maintain flexibility. Just 5 minutes of movement is enough to activate your muscles and relieve morning stiffness.
3. Start with water, not coffee.
After a night’s sleep, your body is dehydrated, so the first thing it needs is water. A glass of water helps kick-start your metabolism, improves blood circulation, aids digestion, and even has a positive effect on your skin. For a twist, add lemon or a few berries.
4. Breathe mindfully
Deep breathing is a quick way to de-stress and calm your mind. Nobbe recommends a simple technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4 seconds again. This will help you focus, reduce anxiety, and set you up for a productive day.
5. Plan your day
Daily motivation starts with a simple plan. It could be a short to-do list, a daily affirmation, or one specific goal. By writing it down or saying it out loud, you can help clear your mind and boost your confidence.
