Ukrainian gymnast Ilya Kovtun won a silver medal in parallel bars at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This is the first ever medal of Ukraine in gymnastics at the Olympic Games.
Kovtun competed in the final with Oleg Verniaev, and both athletes battled strong opponents that included 2024 Olympic all-around silver medalist Zhang Boheng, as well as previous parallel bars medalists including Zou Jinyuan of China, Lucas Dauser of Germany and Ferhat Arikan from Turkey.
The final results of the competition looked like this:
- Zou Jinyuan (China) – 16,200 points
- Ilya Kovtun (Ukraine) – 15,500 points
- Shinnosuke Oka (Japan) – 15,300 points...
- Oleg Vernyaev (Ukraine) – 13,300 points
Thanks to this achievement, Ukraine won a medal in this discipline at the Olympics for the first time, which adds another significant victory to the history of Ukrainian sports.
