Ukraine may introduce a toll for freight transport on certain roads. The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development is working on such a model, Deputy Minister Alena Shkrum said in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.
According to Shkrum, the new law on public-private partnerships allows for the implementation of such infrastructure projects even during wartime. This is a so-called tolling model: cars and passenger cars will use the roads for free, while trucks weighing more than 12 tons will pay for the journey.
The ministry emphasized that a similar system already operates in many European countries and allows attracting private investments without placing an additional burden on the population.
Toll roads for trucks can be an important tool for restoring infrastructure and stimulating the economy. According to Alona Shkrum, the construction of roads and housing creates an economic effect with a multiplier of 2.4 due to new jobs and the involvement of local businesses.
We would like to remind you that in Lviv region, it is planned to repair 18 km of the Nahirne-Dobromyl road to the Shehyni-Medika, Nyzhankovychi-Malkhovice and Smilnytsia-Kroscienko checkpoints. A grant of EUR 4.8 million has been allocated for these works. Also in October, the Road Service held a tender for the repair of the road to "Bukovel" - from Nadvirna to Polyanytsia - with a cost of works of UAH 2.4 billion.
