The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out high-profile arrests of the heads of the Department of the State Customs Service, who were involved in a serious corruption scandal. According to information from sources in law enforcement agencies, officials demanded bribes from regional customs and promised in return to "not touch" their official violations and "cover up" them.
The SBU detained the heads of the Department of the State Customs Service, who "paid tribute" to the regional customs: they face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
It is reported that the officials demanded money from the regional customs, and in return they promised to "not touch" and "cover up" their official violations.
Currently, 28 searches are underway in the Central Office of the State Customs Service, as well as in regional units of departmental security and control of the Western, Southern and Central regions.
