A corruption scandal broke out in the Khmelnytskyi Regional Medical and Social Expertise Center (MSEK). The manager Tetiana Krupa and her son, the head of the regional Pension Fund Oleksandr Krupa, were exposed for illegal enrichment. According to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), almost $6 million in cash was found during searches of their homes.
Law enforcement officers conducted searches as part of criminal proceedings related to the illegal registration of disability for men trying to avoid military service. US$100,000, as well as a number of forged medical documents and lists of "evaders" with fictitious diagnoses, were found in the offices and residences of officials.
Investigating the situation, the SBI found a large amount of cash: almost $5 million 244 thousand, €300 thousand and more than UAH 5 million, as well as luxury jewelry. The money was hidden in different corners of the apartment, in closets, drawers and niches. During the investigation, the official tried to get rid of part of the money by throwing two bags with half a million dollars out the window.
In addition, it turned out that the family owns 30 real estate objects in Khmelnytskyi, Lviv and Kyiv, nine luxury cars and corporate rights worth UAH 48 million. They also own a hotel and restaurant complex of almost 3,000 m² in one of Khmelnytskyi's parks, and abroad the family owns real estate in Austria, Spain and Turkey. The family has accumulated almost $2.3 million in foreign currency accounts.
Officials did not include all these fortunes in their annual declarations. The investigation is ongoing, and investigators are identifying other possible participants in the crimes. A decision is made to notify officials of suspicions of fraud, legalization of property obtained through crime, as well as declaration of false information and illegal enrichment. Sanctions for these articles include imprisonment for up to 12 years with confiscation of property.
