In the Lviv region, a court sentenced Nazariy Marochkanych, the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser, who in July 2023 hit and killed 16-year-old girl Anastasia Danyliv. The Skoli District Court sentenced him to 6 years and 6 months in prison and ordered him to pay UAH 1.4 million in moral compensation to the parents of the deceased.
The tragedy occurred on July 9, 2023 in the village of Verkhnie Synyovidne on the Kyiv-Chop highway. The 26-year-old driver was speeding and did not have time to brake when a pedestrian stepped onto the road. After hitting the girl, he fled the scene of the accident, leaving her to die.
Law enforcement officers later located him using surveillance cameras. Moreover, the accused's father, Yaroslav Marochkanych, tried to take the blame, but witnesses and evidence confirmed that it was Nazariy who was driving.
In court, the defendant pleaded guilty but refused to testify. He also stated that he was ready to compensate the victim's family for only part of the moral damage. The girl's parents insisted on a harsh sentence.
Judge Viktoriya Kurnytska took into account not only the circumstances of the fatal accident, but also Marochkanych's previous criminal record. In January 2025, the Lviv Court of Appeal had already sentenced him to 5 years in prison for illegal trafficking of evaders. Despite this, he remained at large until a new sentence was passed.
According to the court's decision, Nazariy Marochkanych will receive 6 years and 6 months in prison, as well as a 3-year driving ban.
