Lviv Airport may open in spring

Lviv International Airport named after Danylo Halytskyi may resume operations this spring. According to an optimistic scenario, flights may begin in April-May 2025, said the airport's general director, Tetyana Romanovska, in a material for the VZ publication.

Other possible dates for opening the skies include summer. Five to seven airlines are ready to operate in Lviv (within a month of the terminal's launch) as a symbol of strong solidarity with Ukraine. The government is also considering opening another airport in western Ukraine, Uzhhorod.

"Wizzair, Air Baltic, Turkish Airlines, Sky Up, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, LOT are ready to fly from Lviv," Romanovska emphasized. "Currently, we are talking about the resumption of regular flights from Lviv. Most likely, Sky Up will try to return charter flights. They have a good network of routes in Europe. The same routes are ready to be operated from Lviv. Or from another Ukrainian city. This year, representatives of the airline came to us with communication, conducted their audits. Wizzair representatives conducted their audit last year. They are conducting a preliminary analysis and when there is a decision to open the sky, they come to work with us within three to four days.".

Travel companies and tour operators sell summer season tours to Ukrainians from airports in Poland and the EU. Tetyana Romanovska says that if an airport is opened in Lviv, tour operators will quickly reorient themselves, because it will be more convenient and much cheaper than from the EU.

"We would like the airport to open in the summer, because we understand that the main air traffic falls on holidays, summer, and when the day is longer," notes Tetyana Romanovskaya. "If it happens in April or May, it will be extremely good for us.".

As a reminder, Ukrainian airspace has remained closed to commercial flights since February 24, 2022, due to the full-scale Russian invasion. However, the government and airlines are already working on plans for a gradual return to normal operations.
