On July 21, the State Service of Special Communications of Ukraine reported a massive hacker attack on Ukrainian Telegram channels that use the FleepBot post publishing automation service.
According to the agency, hackers hacked FleepBot, developed and owned by a Russian company, and began posting messages on behalf of channel owners. As a result, provocative posts appeared on many well-known Ukrainian Telegram channels that day.
What happened?
Hackers gained access to the FleepBot service and used it to mass publish on popular Ukrainian channels. This caused a wave of false and provocative messages that could misinform users and contribute to panic.
In response to the incident, the State Service for Special Communications urged channel administrators to immediately remove the FleepBot bot from the list of administrators. The agency emphasized the need to avoid using software developed in aggressor countries and to carefully check the origin of the software before using it.
“We would like to once again emphasize the danger of using any software from an aggressor country, and the need to carefully check the origin of the software before using it,” the State Special Communications Service noted.
