The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine announced the identification of more than 200 potential projects for the processing of various types of waste covering the entire territory of the country. According to the department's estimates, the implementation of these initiatives will require about 4 billion euros.
Minister Ruslan Strelets said: "We have analyzed in detail the problems of each region, studied the amount of waste accumulation and its composition, and also studied the experience of European countries. This allowed us to form a plan for placing new waste processing plants throughout Ukraine."
According to him, the plan provides for the implementation of several priority projects. For example, construction of two new waste processing plants is planned in the Kyiv region, the service of which will cover at least 1.5 million residents. These plants will process 470,000 tons of waste every year.
The plan includes deep sorting with selection of useful materials (scrap metal, glass, plastic) and processing of organic waste with subsequent production of biomethane and other products. According to the minister, there are already investors for such a project.
In Ivano-Frankivsk region, construction of waste processing plants according to European standards is also planned. "The waste processing cluster in the region will consist of five factories. They will process more than 450,000 tons of waste annually and serve at least 1.4 million residents," the minister added.
According to his message, negotiations with investors have already begun, and results are expected in the near future.
Construction of 4 plants is planned in Poltava Oblast - one each in Lubny, Kremenchuk, Poltava and Kobelyaki. According to the ministry, about 280,000 tons of solid household waste are accumulated annually in the region. Negotiations with investors regarding these projects have already begun, Strelets said.
A similar project will also be launched in Odesa. It is planned to create 7 plants that will solve waste problems for at least 2.3 million Ukrainians. About 1.5 million tons of waste need to be buried in the region every year.
Transcarpathia, Sumy and Kharkiv regions are also in line.
"I am sure that the implementation of 2-3 pilot projects for the construction of waste processing infrastructure will allow us to avoid looking for investors, they themselves will express interest in cooperation in Ukraine. At the legislative level, we already have all the conditions for this, and at the practical level, we are creating them together with the responsible communities and European experts," the minister assured.
