In Mykolaiv, they are finding a joint solution with international partners to implement a system of transparency and honesty. This initiative is aimed at restoring trust in the city, which is suffering from the consequences of Russian aggression. The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, announced this during the fifth international summit of mayors in Danchen, Moldova.
"We strive to build a system of honesty as a key element on the way to rebuilding our city, which became a victim of Russia's full-scale aggression. The most important thing in power structures is the fight against temptation, which is natural for man. Therefore, we do not believe in individuals, but in a system that will be based on specific rules," the mayor emphasized.
According to Sienkovych, that is why the city actively cooperates with the European Anti-Corruption Initiative, carries out reforms in the field of communal enterprises, implements a transparent procurement system and other measures.
"We plan to become the first city in Ukraine to launch a special website for tracking international aid: how much money is received, where it comes from and how it is used. Transparency and honesty are the key principles of our cooperation with international partners, as trust in this context is extremely important," the mayor emphasized.
In addition, Sienkovych told the participants of the summit about the difficult conditions in which the residents of the Hero City, who defended it during the aggression, live.
"In 2022, our city survived 262 days of continuous shelling by terrorists from Russia and continues to suffer from shelling. These attacks resulted in the loss of human lives, the destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure. For example, the water main from the Dnipro River, which supplied the city with drinking water, was destroyed. Now we are forced to use salt water from the Southern Bug River for technical needs and fight against possible epidemics. However, thanks to the support of international partners, we have hope to solve these problems," he added.
He thanked his partners, in particular Denmark, for their support and cooperation in the improvement of Mykolaiv. The aforementioned country has assumed patronage over the city and is actively contributing to its restoration. Currently, the General Plan is being developed, which will become the basis for the rehabilitation and development of the city.
This news precedes reports on the 5th International Summit of Mayors (IMS), which is being held in the Moldovan city of Danchenyi. Founded in 2016, this summit began as a platform for sharing experiences between local government leaders, and over time grew into something more than just a conference, becoming the birthplace of new projects and partnerships.
The event received the support of the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu. Among the participants are representatives of France, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Moldova and Ukraine. This year's theme is "Building sustainable communities through innovation and cooperation". The summit was attended by more than 200 mayors and community representatives, including those representing Chortkiv, Kopychyntsi, Mykolaiv, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, as well as potential investors and representatives of the European Union.
