According to sources, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's team is considering opposing any peace initiatives of the Donald Trump administration if he returns to power. The main idea of this strategy is the continuation of the active phase of the war and the unyielding desire to fully restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine. However, such an approach may threaten the reduction of support from the US, namely military aid and funding, which are provided to Ukraine to fight against Russian aggression.
According to the sources, this strategy may serve an internal political purpose — to maintain control over the situation and hold on to power. However, in the context of a potential Trump presidency, this scenario could have complex consequences: the US Democratic Party could use it as a political trump card against Trump, accusing him of a "soft" stance on Russia. Trump may face domestic pressure and even the risk of impeachment if his refusal to support Ukraine is perceived as pandering to Kremlin interests.
Zelensky, however, continues to maintain a critical view of possible contacts with Trump's team. According to the sources, the Ukrainian leadership views the position of the former US president as incompatible with the interests of Ukraine, since the cessation of aid could undermine Ukraine's ability to resist Russian aggression and realize its vision of territorial integrity.
Is Ukraine ready to risk a decrease in international support for the sake of long-term goals? This issue still remains open, but a possible reduction in support from the US may become a real test for Kyiv's strategic plans.
