About 9,500 convicted Ukrainians are already serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and some of them are directly on the front lines. This was reported by the State Penitentiary Service. Among the military are about a hundred women who are involved in logistics, communications, and medical support.
The Ministry of Justice explains: not every prisoner can be mobilized. The ban applies to those convicted of particularly serious crimes - from terrorism to sexual crimes. At the same time, Deputy Minister of Justice Yevhen Pikalov believes that participation in the war is not only a contribution to defense, but also a real chance for a person to start from scratch.
The military assesses the participation of such fighters positively. As Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Zhorin noted, it all depends on how the command works with them: with proper training, they prove to be disciplined and motivated.
This experience can become not only a temporary solution for the army, but also part of a broader system of resocialization through responsibility to the state.
