First Labor Experience: When and How Teens can work in the summer

Summer vacations are not only a vacation, but also an opportunity for teenagers to gain their first work experience and earn their own money. However, the employment of minors has its own legal features, which are governed by the legislation of Ukraine.

At what age can you work

As a general rule, you can officially work from the age of 16. In this case, no additional permits are required.

However, the law provides for exceptions:

  • from the age of 15 - with the consent of one of the parents or the person who replaces it;

  • From the age of 14 - subject to performing only easy work in their free time (for example, during vacations) and also with the consent of one parent.

Rights and guarantees for minors

Minors have the same labor rights as adults, but they provide additional guarantees:

  • annual medical examination (up to 21 years);

  • wages are not lower than the one who receives an adult employee in the same position;

  • The right to annual leave, as well as additional - educational.

Limiting time

Maximum working week for minors:

  • at the age of 16-18 years - no more than 36 hours;

  • At 14-15 years - no more than 24 hours.

What work is forbidden for teenagers

The law prohibits the involvement of minors in:

  • heavy and harmful work;

  • underground work;

  • night, overtime and work on weekends;

  • Lifting of goods beyond established norms:

    • 14 years - no more than 5 kg;

    • 15 years - 12 kg;

    • 16 years - 14 kg;

    • 17 years - 16 kg.

Employment registration

For the official registration of a teenager, a written employment contract is concluded. Documents Required:

  • passport or birth certificate;

  • identification code;

  • consent of one parent (for 14-15 years);

  • Medical certificate.
