A South Korean government delegation is returning to Seoul after an important visit to Kyiv to discuss measures to cooperate in response to the strengthening of military ties between North Korea and Russia. The visit, which took place against the background of rising tensions in Eastern Europe and the Asian region, highlighted the new dynamics of international relations and the mutual interest of Ukraine and South Korea through security cooperation.
The delegation, consisting of high-ranking intelligence and military officials, visited Ukraine after briefing NATO representatives in Brussels last week on the deployment of North Korean troops.
"We will take necessary measures in cooperation with the international community based on the group's reports," South Korean Defense Minister Kim Eun-hyung said.
He apparently meant that Seoul was considering sending a group of observers to Ukraine to monitor North Korean troops deployed in support of Russia.
National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik said that such a trip would be necessary for South Korea to understand modern military operations.
If sent, the observer group is expected to consist of military and intelligence officials and possibly participate in analyzing North Korea's battle tactics and interrogating captured servicemen.
Amid growing concerns about the possible involvement of North Korean troops in hostilities against Ukraine, South Korea has promised to take "phased measures" in response to the level of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
