Orthodox on July 18 honor John the long -suffering

Today, Ukrainians celebrate several holidays - church and folk. In the Orthodox calendar, this date is dedicated to Reverend John the long-suffering from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. In the people, the holiday is called Omelyanov Day - it is considered that it is from this point that the summer heat begins to fall, and nature is preparing for the autumn transition.

Reverend John the long-suffering lived in the XII century and was a monk of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. During his lifetime, he spent more than 30 years in full loneliness, keeping a harsh fasting and wearing heavy veri. To overcome the carnal temptation, he even buried himself on his chest into the ground for the time of Lent.

According to legend, the devil appeared in the form of a fiery snake, but the saint defeated fear and passion. For his spiritual exploits, he was granted to heal others from similar temptations. His relics are still resting in the nearby caves of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

In addition to John, on July 18, the Orthodox Church also honors:

  • martyr Emilian;

  • Martyr Yakinf Amastridsky;

  • Reverend Pomfu, prisoner of Kiev-Pechersk;

  • Nitri's Reverend Pomfu.

The old style of this day is remembered by the Holy Martyr Esebius, Bishop of the Samosatsky.
