The head of the Corruption Center Vitaliy Shabunin launched a public campaign against a bill that allows the accused to avoid trial if they are mobilized to the Armed Forces. According to the anti -corruptionman, it can become an "indulgence for fire -corruption", because at least 54 persons of high -profile criminal cases can be used by this opportunity.
“This is a scheme of evasion of justice. And such a "legitimate" loophole will only undermine the confidence in mobilization, courts and the state in general, ”Shabunin wrote on social networks.
However, it is because of this scheme that he himself is now publicly accused of trying to avoid responsibility. Journalist and military Volodymyr Boyko recalled that in 2023, Shabunin's lawyer filed a petition for suspension of the case for beating the journalist Vsevolod Filimonenko (the incident happened in 2017). The basis was the passage of the saber of service in 207 separate battalion of territorial defense.
The court agreed and the hearing was postponed. According to Boyko, the purpose was to reach the deadline for criminal prosecution. However, in April 2024, the Dniprovsky District Court of Kyiv found that Shabunin was actually living in the capital and did not pass the service. The case was renewed and the next meeting was appointed on June 10, 2025.
Thus, Shabunin was in a difficult position - publicly condemning the legislative norm, which opens the door for potential abuse, he himself turned out to be her first and rather illustrative example.
