US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during which he greeted the achievement of an agreement on a large -scale exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
The American diplomat reported this in his post on the social network X.
“The United States has presented a strong peace plan for Ukraine, and we congratulate the exchange of prisoners of war reached in Istanbul. Let's not miss this great opportunity. It is time to put an end to this war, ”Rubio wrote.
He also noted that during a conversation with Lavrov, he repeated the message of US President Donald Trump about the need to stop death and destruction.
It should be reminded that according to the results of negotiations between delegations of Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, which took place on May 16 in Istanbul, the parties agreed to exchange prisoners of war in the format "1000 to 1000".
On Monday, Trump's telephone talks with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are scheduled. After that, the American leader plans contact with NATO leaders.
For its part, Ukraine has already begun to formulate lists of Russian prisoners of war to implement the exchange agreements.
