September 2: holiday today, Ukrainian traditions, folk signs

The date of September 2nd has special significance for both Ukrainians and the whole world. It combines religious, folk and historical traditions, as well as modern professional holidays.

Holidays in Ukraine

In Ukraine, this day is celebrated as the Day of the City of Odessa - one of the most beautiful and oldest centers of the country, located on the Black Sea coast. The townspeople traditionally celebrate with a concert, cultural events and fairs. However, in conditions of war, the organizers urge residents and guests not to ignore air raid sirens.

In addition, September 2nd honors representatives of an important profession – Notary Day. On this day, notaries, their assistants, and archive workers are congratulated. Without their work, many agreements and the protection of citizens' rights are impossible.

Among the famous Ukrainians celebrating their birthdays on this day are poet and philologist Ivan Vahylevych, writer Volodymyr Levytskyi, artist Bohdan Soroka, and actor Ostap Stupka.

Church holiday

Orthodox Christians today honor the holy martyr Mamant, who is considered the protector of domestic animals. He is prayed to for the health of livestock and prosperity in the household. The Church also commemorates the founders of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra - Saints Theodosius and Anthony.

World events

September 2 is a significant date for the whole world: the anniversary of the end of World War II. It was on this day in 1945 that the surrender of Japan was signed aboard the American battleship Missouri, ending the bloodiest conflict of the 20th century.

Famous people born on this day include Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Frederick Soddy, British politician Keir Starmer, actor Keanu Reeves, boxer Lennox Lewis, and tennis player Jimmy Connors.

Folk signs

Our ancestors carefully watched the natural signs of this day:

  • storks or swans fly in large flocks - to a short "Indian summer";

  • thunder on September 2nd heralds late winter;

  • large root vegetables - until cold December;

  • low clouds - to rain.

The people dedicated the day to caring for livestock: goats and sheep were treated to fresh fodder and grazed on the best meadows. Rye and oats were harvested in the fields, and potatoes were harvested in the gardens. Young people often held weddings on this day.

Prohibitions

On the day of memory of Saint Mamant, it is forbidden to treat animals cruelly or force them to do hard work. It was also believed that one should not complain about problems - this will only attract new difficulties.
