The Committee for the Taras Shevchenko National Award of Ukraine has published the list of cultural figures nominated in eight categories who have advanced to the third round of the competition. Summing up the results will take place in March, when the winners will be chosen from these candidates, who will receive the highest state award for significant contribution to the development of culture and art.
Changes in nominations and new rules
The year 2024 brought several innovations, in particular the addition of a new category - "Decorative and applied art", which became a logical step in reflecting a wider spectrum of cultural activities in Ukraine. However, there were also changes in the already existing nominations. Thus, in the "Theatrical Art" category, two plays were excluded from the list of contenders: the opera "Dialogues of the Carmelite Sisters" by Vasyl Vovkun and the play "Red Ruta" by Maksym Golenko. The reason for the exclusion of "Dialogues of the Carmelite Sisters" is related to the violation of application deadlines - the premiere took place after the established deadline.
Nominees of the Shevchenko Prize 2024
In the "Literature" , the works of such authors as Yuriy Izdryk, Svitlana Povalyaeva, Maryana Savka and others made it to the third round. Their works cover various genres and topics, from poetry to prose, which clearly reflects the breadth of the literary process in Ukraine.
In the "Literary and Art Studies" , publications devoted to the history of Ukrainian literature and its connections with other cultural traditions are presented, in particular, the work of Valery Bitayev, Vladyslav Kornienko, and Yuriy Mosenkis, which reveals the centuries-old literary heritage of Ukraine.
Publicism and journalism are represented by the works of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Pavel Kazarin, which highlight important historical and social processes important for the modern development of the country.
In the field of "Musical Art" this year, such iconic groups and personalities as the band "Pirig i Batig" with the album "Zeleny" and composers Bohdana Pivnenko and Oleksiy Shimko, whose music leaves a deep mark on the cultural life of Ukraine, have been nominated for the award this year.
Visual arts traditionally attract the attention of domestic and international audiences with their unique and emotionally rich works. Vira Barynova's exhibition "Cry of Silence" and other works of Ukrainian artists reflect complex social and political topics relevant for our time.
Cinematography this year is marked by the full-length film "Dovbush" by Oleksandr Sanin, which has already become a landmark phenomenon in Ukrainian cinema.
Winners will be announced in March
All these talented artists continue to move towards victory in one of the most prestigious national awards, which is recognized not only in Ukraine, but also abroad. The awarding of the Shevchenko Prize traditionally takes place before March 9, the birthday of the great Ukrainian Taras Shevchenko.
Candidates who have reached this stage have already gained significant support among the cultural community and the public. The award is an important distinction that emphasizes not only the skill of artists, but also their contribution to the preservation and development of the national identity and culture of Ukraine.
