Despite the warming, the electricity supply situation in Ukraine may worsen again. The reason is planned repairs at nuclear power plants, which will temporarily remove powerful power units from the power system. This may become a critical load on the power grid, which will lead to the return of power outages.
This was warned by Yuriy Boyko, a member of the supervisory board of NPC Ukrenergo, noting that the situation could become more complicated in March-April.
According to forecasts, the main factors that could lead to electricity shortages are as follows:
- Scheduled repairs at nuclear power plants – one unit of a nuclear power plant provides about 1,000 MW, and its shutdown can significantly affect the energy balance.
- Reduced production of hydroelectric power plants - due to the snowless winter, the volume of water in reservoirs has significantly decreased, which limits the ability of hydroelectric power plants to generate electricity.
- General capacity shortage – due to damage to energy infrastructure from Russian attacks, Ukraine does not have enough backup sources of generation.
According to the expert, there are several ways to minimize risks:
- Economical electricity consumption – following recommendations for economical use of light, especially during peak hours.
- Increased electricity imports – Ukraine may increase electricity purchases from Europe.
- Use of backup sources by businesses – commercial enterprises can connect their generators and battery stations to the grid, which will help balance the system.
“If all available reserves were to be utilized, it could replace an entire large thermal power plant,” Yuriy Boyko noted.
