A new scandal has erupted in the political arena of Ukraine. Oleksiy Honcharenko, a member of parliament from the European Solidarity party, said that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine has allegedly prepared a case against Rustem Umerov, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. According to the MP, Umerov is suspected of embezzling public funds.
Goncharenko also claims that Umerov was given a part of the “common fund” that was allegedly taken to the Persian Gulf countries. The deputy did not provide details about these allegations, but noted that he decided not to return to Umerov’s “surname” in the recordings, urging the audience to “guess for themselves.”
In his comment, the politician recalled that a year ago he called for Umerov to be fired, but, according to him, at that time he received answers about the official's "honesty", "professionalism" and "high competence". Goncharenko added that the current situation, in his opinion, calls such assessments into question.
There are no official statements from NABU at the time of publication. There has also been no confirmation of the suspicion or details of the case from law enforcement agencies. The National Security and Defense Council and Rustem Umerov himself have not publicly commented on the information voiced by the deputy.
The situation remains a subject of political debate, and further actions by anti-corruption authorities should determine whether these statements will have legal consequences.
