Summer, which will last until October, will now be the norm for Ukraine

This year, the meteorological summer in Ukraine lasted from mid-May to the first decade of October, and in the future, such long and hot seasons may become the new norm for the country. This was told in an interview with Channel 24 by Vira Balabukh, head of the department of applied meteorology and climatology of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

“The long and hot summer that we have been observing this year will apparently become our new climate norm quite soon,” she said. According to the expert, the duration of the hot season in Ukraine will increase, in particular, summer will start earlier and last longer.

The main factors for this are the greenhouse effect, which increases the temperature of the planet, as well as increased solar activity. “According to the World Meteorological Organization, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached its maximum in 800,000 years,” Balabukh noted.

This year's abnormally warm weather in Ukraine in the fall is explained by a powerful anticyclone and warm air coming from the subtropics.

The summer of 2024 went down in history as a particularly hot one. In the south of Kherson, Mykolaiv regions and in some areas of Crimea, the July temperature reached a record +28.0…+28.8 °C. “Similar indicators of the average monthly temperature are the norm in cities such as Jakarta, Singapore, Mumbai, Manila, and other settlements located in the equatorial and subequatorial belt!” commented forecaster Ihor Kybalchych.

According to him, July 2024 will go down in history as one of the hottest and driest in Ukraine, which confirms the trend towards climate change that our country is already facing.
