Spices not only enhance the taste of food, but they can also be a useful addition to the weight loss process . Studies show that some of them speed up metabolism, appetite and even help burn fat .
However, it is important to understand that spices alone do not provide instant results . They only work effectively when combined with proper nutrition, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle.
Red pepper (cayenne)
Capsaicin is the main bioactive component of cayenne pepper. Some studies suggest that capsaicin may reduce appetite and promote fat loss in the short term, but specific research on cayenne pepper is limited.
Some studies suggest that capsaicin speeds up the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, increases the number of calories burned, stimulates thermogenesis (the internal process of burning fat), and increases the feeling of satiety, reducing the amount of food consumed.
However, more research is needed to understand the mechanism of action of capsaicin in cayenne pepper. For example, in one 2017 study, people who took 6 mg of capsaicin per day for 12 weeks showed better results in reducing body mass index (BMI), weight, and waist circumference compared to those who took a placebo.
Garlic
Some studies suggest that the sulfur-containing compound allicin, found in garlic, has anti-obesity properties, but the results are conflicting.
A 2021 study found that people who consumed garlic had a reduction in waist circumference, but no significant changes in body weight or BMI. In another study, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who took garlic supplements showed a reduction in weight, BMI, and waist circumference.
Another study in people with metabolic syndrome found that eating raw, crushed garlic twice daily for four weeks led to a reduction in waist circumference, as well as a reduction in high blood pressure and triglyceride levels.
However, in a study of obese women, the group that took allium for two months showed significant reductions in weight, waist and hip circumference, and BMI. But the group that took a placebo also experienced weight loss, making it difficult to determine the exact effect of allium.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek's high fiber content may help reduce appetite and overeating, which in turn helps with weight loss. However, there is no reliable evidence that fenugreek is effective for weight loss.
In a small study of nine overweight women, participants drank tea containing fennel, fenugreek, or a placebo before lunch. The women who drank the fenugreek tea reported less hunger and greater satiety, but it had no effect on overall calorie intake.
Black pepper
Black pepper contains piperine, an alkaloid that has antioxidant properties and potentially aids in weight loss.
In a study of 16 people, a black pepper-based drink increased feelings of fullness and reduced appetite.
Cinnamon
All types of cinnamon contain the compound cinnamaldehyde, which has properties that may promote weight loss.
Studies show that adding cinnamon to the diet can significantly impact these obesity indicators. The effects were particularly pronounced in people over 50 years of age and those with a body mass index over 30.
Turmeric
Curcumin has been linked to a variety of processes that promote weight loss when taken in amounts ranging from 70 to 2400 mg per day for 4-36 weeks.
Ginger
The main active substances in ginger – gingerols and shogaols – may affect calorie burning and feelings of satiety.
A 2019 meta-analysis of 14 studies found that adding ginger to the diet reduced body weight, waist-to-hip ratio, and fasting blood sugar levels.
Cumin
Some studies show that cumin may also promote weight loss, although more data is needed to make a strong claim about this.
However, in a study of 72 participants, those who took cumin with lime showed greater weight and BMI reductions compared to groups taking cumin alone or a placebo.
Cardamom
Cardamom is widely known to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help with weight loss, but human studies are currently lacking.
A study in mice showed that cardamom helps maintain muscle mass and reduce fat mass by regulating appetite and improving energy metabolism.
