Earthquakes in Poltava region and in the central part of Ukraine are no longer exceptional. According to Dr. Physical and Mathematical Sciences, a leading researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine Dmitry Grin, the activity is conditioned by the peculiarities of the geological structure of this territory.
According to the scientist, the region is located on the Ukrainian crystalline shield. However, this does not mean complete geological stability. The territory is divided into megablocks, between which tectonic faults lie. It is in these areas that slight shifts occur, which cause underground shocks.
The depth of such earthquakes usually does not exceed 3-4 km. They do not pose a threat to the population, but thanks to modern equipment seismologists are increasingly fixing even weak vibrations of soil.
Another zone of seismic activity in Ukraine is the region at the turn of Chernivtsi, Khmelnytsky and Vinnytsia regions. After the construction of the Novodnistrovsky hydrococade, the structure of the load in the earth's crust changed there - the geomas has redistributed, which led to an increase in the frequency of small underground shocks.
“ This is a natural process - the planet moves. There is no danger at this time , ”Dmitry Grin reassures.
We will remind, on July 1 in the Poltava region there was another magnitude earthquake of more than 3 points. The source of the push was at a depth of 7 km. And the strongest in 2025 earthquake in this region occurred on February 1 - its strength reached almost 4 points. According to classification, these earthquakes are not noticeable to humans, but they give scientists important information about the deep processes that occur in the Earth's crust of Ukraine.
