The colossal tension in which the conflict in Ukraine is holding the country was also reflected in the conflict surrounding the extremely unpopular bill on mobilization, writes Politico . On Thursday, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine withdrew a high-profile draft law on new mobilization rules from the Verkhovna Rada. It is expected that the Cabinet of Ministers will soon submit to the Council a revised draft of the law, taking into account the proposals from the deputies.
In Kyiv, it is noted that this year the Ukrainian army will need an additional half a million people. However, the bill is so unpopular among Ukrainians that politicians are afraid to take responsibility for it. Even Volodymyr Zelenskyi prefers that the draft law on mobilization be proposed by the government, not by himself.
As the publication writes, months of military operations that cost tens of thousands of lives but did not bring significant results, corruption scandals in the army and a sense of fatigue both within the country and among Ukraine's allies led to the fact that the initial enthusiasm of Ukrainians to join the ranks of the Armed Forces evaporated.
Moreover, the economic consequences of a new large-scale mobilization for the country are increasingly being considered in Kyiv. Practically the entire state budget of Ukraine is spent on military efforts , and aid from the EU and the USA . But since this aid is now in question, Kyiv has to find a balance between attracting new soldiers and keeping the economy and military industry afloat. According to Zelensky himself, the mobilization of approximately half a million people will cost approximately €12 billion, and considering that six Ukrainians are required to pay taxes to pay the salary of one soldier, the country lacks approximately 3 million working people.
