In Zhytomyr, law enforcement officers detained two agents of Russian special services who planned to carry out a terrorist act against the Ukrainian police. The attackers rented the apartment, equipped with explosive devices and developed an attack on a police outfit.
"The Security Service and the National Police foiled an attempt by enemy special services to carry out an insidious terrorist attack against Ukrainian law enforcement officers in Zhytomyr. According to the results of complex measures, two Russian agents were arrested "on the spot" who were preparing to blow up the police outfit that was supposed to arrive on a fake call to 102", the SBU reported.
According to the intelligence services, enemy agents rented an apartment in Zhytomyr and installed two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to commit the terrorist attack.
"In order to undermine the police outfit, they made a fake call to the special line 102 to a pre-rented apartment," the National Police reported.
"One of the explosives was hidden in a soft toy, the other was connected to a mobile phone, the camera of which filmed the entrance to the apartment. With the help of remote access to this gadget, the enemy planned to activate both SVP when the police entered the room through the open door," the SBU said.
The law enforcement officers, as indicated, worked ahead of time: they detained both involved in their hotel, where they were supposed to hide, immediately after calling the "hotline" of the National Police.
"The detainees turned out to be two residents of Dnipropetrovsk region, who were recruited remotely by the enemy through Telegram channels in search of "easy" money," the SBU said.
According to the special service, the suspects arrived in Zhytomyr by bus and took two packages with explosive devices for a terrorist attack from the hiding place.
"The examination established that the SVP were equipped in thermoses and filled with stones to enhance the striking effect in the event of detonation," the SBU said.
Detainees were informed of the suspicion under Art. 2 Art. 15, ch. 2 Art. 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (completed attempt to commit a terrorist act based on a prior conspiracy by a group of persons). They are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
