Ukraine agreed with the European Union to extend the temporary protection status for its citizens. The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Olha Stefanishyna, said that the review of this status will take place only if the security situation in the country improves. Currently, such conditions have not been met.
According to Stefanyshyn, the status of temporary protection will remain on the previous conditions, and the forced return of Ukrainians to their homeland is currently not considered.
Changes in the status of temporary protection for Ukrainians will be implemented taking into account the smooth return of citizens. However, this will happen after the security situation improves.
Currently, a significant number of Ukrainians who left the country because of the war are abroad. However, statistics show that their number is decreasing. In particular, in recent months, about 23,100 Ukrainians have given up their temporary protection status.
In general, the number of persons with temporary protection decreased in nine EU countries. Germany, which provides them with social support, is most popular among Ukrainian refugees. The highest level of aid for Ukrainians is provided by Sweden, Latvia, Germany, Lithuania, Romania, Portugal and Denmark.
However, according to forecasts of the National Bank of Ukraine, a gradual return of migrants to Ukraine is expected after 2024. This process will be gradual, as many people have already had time to adapt to life abroad. An outflow of 200,000 migrants is predicted for 2024.
