On November 6, 2024, Ukrainian intelligence carried out a historic operation, attacking Russian ships in the Caspian Sea - 1,500 km from the Ukrainian border. The kamikaze drones damaged at least two vessels, among which were probably the Tatarstan and Dagestan missile ships. It is also reported that small missile ships of project 21631 could be affected.
The attacked ships were based in Caspiysk, in Russian Dagestan, where parts of the coastal forces, including marines, were stationed, which actively participated in hostilities in the east of Ukraine, in particular in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Because of this operation, traffic at the Makhachkala airport was temporarily suspended. The attack on the Russian flotilla demonstrates a new stage in Ukrainian military strategy, indicating the ability to deliver powerful strikes on enemy targets even at a distance from the front zones.
