Against the backdrop of constant attacks by Shahed-type drones, a new direction in defense technologies has been formed in Ukraine from scratch — interceptor drones, which are already changing the approach to air defense.
According to information from military and technological circles, the first solutions appeared not as a strategic development, but as a forced reaction to the lack of classic air defense means. In 2022, when Russian drones began to massively attack Ukrainian cities, there were virtually no effective and cheap tools to intercept them.
Small teams of military personnel, engineers, and volunteers began to change the situation. It was at the unit level, in particular in one of the brigades in the Kharkiv region, that they began to experiment with aircraft-type drones capable of catching up with aerial targets.
According to the interlocutors, a key factor in the success was the rapid interaction between the front and the manufacturers. The developers received direct feedback from combat conditions and promptly made changes to the design and software.
As a result, it was possible to create interceptors that can reach speeds of over 200 km/h and can effectively destroy enemy drones in the air. At the same time, their cost is tens and hundreds of times lower than classic air defense missiles.
A special role in the development of this direction is played by volunteer organizations that help coordinate the interaction between the military and manufacturers, as well as finance individual developments. This model has effectively turned the front into a platform for rapid technological solutions.
Experts point out that the technology itself is not too difficult to copy. At the same time, its effectiveness is determined not only by technical characteristics, but also by the level of training of operators and application tactics.
Despite initial skepticism, after almost two years of use, interceptor drones have proven their effectiveness and are gradually becoming an important element of the Ukrainian air defense system.
It is expected that this segment will continue to scale in the near future, and Ukrainian developments are already attracting interest at the international level.
