Birth rate in Ukraine hits record low

During the first half of 2024, 87,655 newborns were recorded in Ukraine, which is 9% less than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Justice. At the same time, 250,972 deaths occurred during the same period. The largest number of newborns and deaths was recorded in Dnipropetrovsk region and Kyiv, according to Opendatabot data.

The birth rate in 2024 decreased by 1.5 times compared to the pre-war period: 87,655 newborns in the first half of the year versus 132,595 in 2021.

In particular, Kyiv topped the list with the largest number of newborns – 9,695 children, Lviv region – 7,923, and Dnipropetrovsk region – 6,962. In the frontline regions, the situation is much worse: only 221 newborns were registered in Kherson region, 702 in Donetsk region, and not a single child was registered in Luhansk region in six months.

The mortality situation is also alarming: for every newborn, there are three deaths. This is one of the main indicators of the demographic crisis. For comparison, in 2018-2020, there were two deaths per child.

In total, 250,972 people died in Ukraine in the first six months of 2024, which is 1.4 times less than in the same period in 2021, when 349,041 deaths were recorded. However, 2021 was the peak year for mortality due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fewest deaths were recorded in frontline areas, such as Kherson (2,334) and Donetsk (5,753), as well as Chernivtsi region (5,422). The highest number of deaths was observed in Dnipropetrovsk region (26,374), Kharkiv region (17,999) and Kyiv (17,449).
