In the context of the escalation of the conflict and growing threats on the eastern front, Ukraine appealed to the United States for assistance in striking targets on the territory of Russia. This decision was caused by the successes of the Russian troops in the Kharkiv direction, which create serious challenges for the Ukrainian defense.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, referring to the words of American officials, Kyiv turned to Washington with a request to provide more intelligence information about military targets on Russian territory, as well as to allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike them with American weapons.
Ukraine appealed to the Biden administration with a request to provide intelligence on objects on the territory of Russia, on which Kyiv could strike. In addition, Kyiv asked the United States to lift restrictions on the use of American weapons against military targets on the territory of Russia. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal with reference to American defense officials.
Such a request came against the background of the greatest territorial successes of the Russian troops in the Kharkiv direction. According to other officials, Ukraine's received request "is under consideration."
At the same time, as the official representative of the White House, John Kirby, said on Friday, the United States, as before, "does not encourage and does not allow attacks on Russian territory with weapons provided by the United States."
"This is our policy, which remains unchanged," he emphasized.
If Washington agrees to such changes, it could mark "a major shift in the administration's policy," the newspaper noted. Previously, the US provided Ukraine with ATACMS missiles and other weapons systems, with the condition that they would not be used to strike targets on the territory of Russia. This condition, which Ukraine agreed to as a condition for receiving weapons, was designed to reduce the risk of a direct confrontation between the United States and Russia.
